How much water for wildlife?
The deep pools along the trail - called borrow pits - resulted from road and trail construction. There borrow pits are evidence of human influence on the natural water system of Everglades National Park. The extensive canal network throughout south Florida and competing demands for water have greatly affected the park's ecosystem.
Water levels, indicated on the gauge in the water, should be high during the rainy summer system and low during dry winter months. Agriculture and urban water needs outside the park can cause unnatural fluctuations in the flow in the slough. Both the amount of water - and the timing of its delivery - determine critical conditions for alligators, wading birds and a host of other Everglades residents.
The content of water flowing into the Everglades also affects plants and animals. For example, phosphates and nitrates from agricultural runoff promote excessive growth of cattails - forever changing the face of the "sawgrass" Everglades.
