A Confederate soldier stands about eight feet tall, in marble, upon a granite base that is about twenty feet tall. He stands with his rifle in front of him, butt on the ground, with both hands around the barrel. Visible are his canteen, cartridge box and bayonet. At the center of the base is "1861-1865," and "CONFEDERATE" is at the bottom of the base. The inscription is:
