The details read:
'Norchard Drain
This outfall into the River Lyd comes from old
colliery workings between Norchard and
Pillowell. About 5,000 gallons/20,000 litres a
minute flows out of the pipe, winter and summer
alike. The red colour is caused by Iron Oxide (or
rust!) due to water leaching through the ground
via the ironstone layers deep down. This
colouration is a natural process and is not due to
pollution. The normal colour of the River can be
seen upstream near the bridge.
On occasion you can see the Kingfisher in this
section but you are more likely to see the
Dipper, Yellow and Pied Wagtail, Heron, Coot,
Moorhen, Long Tailed Tit, Coal Tit and Marsh
Tit. Overhead you can hear the Buzzard calling.
Please keep the riverside path and the picnic
areas at the end of it tidy. Thank you.
