This beautiful old freestanding column was placed some time between 1724 and 1736 and is located in a small park in Hradcanské Square. Its top is adored with a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus. The base of the column was formerly decorated with the statues of eight saints: St. Charles Borome, St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, St. Florian, St. John (Jan) of Nepomuk, St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Wenceslaus (Václav), St. Adalbert (Vojtech) and St. Guy (Vít). See this waymarking link from 2009 that shows the column when the saint statues were still in place (

"When the bubonic plague raged through Prague from 1713 – 1714, a mass prayer for its dispersion took place in Hradcany Square. In 1724 - 1736, a Marian Plague Column was erected in the spot where the altar stood. The author of its architectonic composition is unknown, but Johann Ulrich Mannes did the stone-work, Frantisek Maxmilian Brokoff created the statues in 1724 – 1731, with Franz Ignaz Weiss contributing his sculptures in 1731 – 1736." --Source (
