Im Nordquerhaus des Wetzlarer Doms befindet sich eine Skulptur des Kreuztragenden Christus. Sie zeigt ihn zusammen mit einer Statue Simon von Kyrene auf dem Weg nach Golgota. Die Laubholzfiguren auf einem Unterbau entstanden im ersten Drittel des 15. Jahrhunderts und sind oberrheinischer Herkunft. Die Skulptur ist 160 cm groß und erhielt eine mehrfarbige Gestalt auf Kreidegrund.

1995 konservierte der Restaurator Peter R. Pracher aus Würzburg den Kreuztragenden Christus. Die Untersuchungen ergaben zudem, dass das Gewand Jesu ursprünglich weiß war, um die Unschuld zu symbolisieren. Später wurde das Gewand zunächst mit rotbrauner Ölfarbe bemalt, ehe schließlich eine dunkelbraune Ölfarbe folgte. Bei der Konservierung wurde auf das Wiederherstellen der weißen Farbgebung verzichtet. Dennoch konnten Schäden behoben und die Holzfigur geschützt werden.

Die Originalstatue des Simon von Kyrene wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts gestohlen. 1996 erstellte der Bildhauer Karl-Heinz Müller aus Brühl eine Nachbildung anhand von Fotografien des Originals. Im Oktober 1997 wurde das gestohlene Original nach über 16 Jahren wiedergefunden. Es befindet sich heute im Wetzlarer Stadtmuseum.

[EN] In the northern transept of the cathedral of Wetzlar there is a sculpture of the cross-bearing Christ. It shows him together with a statue of Simon of Cyrene, on the way to Calvary. The hardwood pieces on a foundation were created in the first third of the 15th century in the Upper Rhine region. The sculpture is 160 cm tall and a multi-colored figure on chalk ground.

In 1995 Peter R. Pracher from Würzburg restored to cross-bearing Christ. The investigations revealed that the robe of Jesus was originally white to symbolize innocence. Later, the gown was first painted with a reddish brown oil paint, which was finally followed by a dark brown oil paint.

The original statue of Simon of Cyrene was stolen in the second half of the 20th century. 1996 the sculptor Karl-Heinz Müller from Brühl cretaed a replica based on photographs of the original. In October 1997, the original was recovered after more than 16 years. It is now in the Wetzlar Town Museum.
