At this Lewis and Clark Campsite on 2 September 1804, the expedition mistakenly concluded that the sand ridges and mounds in the region, actually caused by Missouri River floods, were ancient fortifications. This campsite was yet another camp during the period when Pvt. Shannon was lost and not found until 11 September 1804.
