Cap Gordon Osborne Sutherland was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia on December 24, 1890 and was the son of Claude Sutherland and Netta Archibald Sutherland.

He was married, at the age of 28, to Rose Mary Sanderson, age 22, on October 16, 1919 in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Rose Mary was born in Nelson, British Columbia and was the daughter of Robert Sanderson and Elizabeth Waite Sanderson.

Cap Gordon Osborne Sutherland passed away on March 7, 1991 at the age of 100.

The church was built in 1907, and has hosted many church services, weddings, funeral meetings, and celebrations through the years.

Orginally the church was built as a Baptist Mission Church. In 1913 it became affiliated with the Anglican Church of Canada in the Anglican Diocese of Kootenay. It is presently operated as a sub-parish of the Parish of St. David in Castlegar.

To the rear is the church's cemetery. In it, besides many of the community's pioneers, are two plaques placed in memory of the occupants of two cemeteries, those of Deer Park and Renata, which were flooded with the construction of Hugh Keenleyside dam and the consequent formation of Arrow Lakes in 1965.
