The bell, of unknown origin and heritage, was dedicated to the memory of Douglas Bennett, the son of John W. Bennett, past reverend of the church. Douglas tragically died on June 20th, 1902, at the young age of sixteen. John Bennett, Douglas's father, had been instrumental in establishing several Methodist Episcopal Churches further south, in the Butte area, in the 1880s, before coming to Missoula. He had served as Pastor of Trinity UMC, Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Mount Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church and Unity Methodist Episcopal Church, all in the Butte area, before becoming Pastor of this church.

The church beside which the bell stands was built in 1911, with additions occurring
