Located just south of Hwy 140 and just north of Lake of the Woods are a number of wooden structures that were once a ranger station and a work center in the 1930s through the 1960s and possibly 1970s. These structures included cabins utilized as living quarters as well as maintenance facilities. They were all built by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of the New Deal program enacted by then-president Franklin Roosevelt.
One of the wooden structures within this cloister of buildings is a former gas barn which contains a GasBoy pump standing in front. I've looked at a picture of this building from 1983 and it shows another GasBoy pump which was located next to and just south of this building but is no longer there. From doing a little research online regarding the company, I would assume this gas pump to be an original pump from when the building was constructed in the mid-to-late 1930s. This pump no longer functions and its hose and nozzle are gone but it still stands here today as a hint to yesteryear when these facilities were an active bunch.
The property belongs to the Bureau of Land Management and is leased to the nearby Lake of the Woods Resort. The cabins have been converted into seasonal rentals and other buildings remain unused or for storage.
