The current bridge was constructed in 1949-1950. The original bridge at this location was a wooden bascule bridge that was built in 1850. It was replaced in 1891 by a bridge that was called the Herkulesbrücke because of the Hercules statues adorning it. This bridge was severely damaged during World War II, and most of the sculptures were destroyed. The current bridge replaced the damaged bridge and is now a three-lane concrete bridge. It retains the name Herkulesbrücke even though it is completely unadorned and has no statues.
