This plaque describes the actions of Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery during the Battle of Chickamauga fought September 19–20, 1863. The battery was commanded by Capt. Wilbur F. Goodspeed. The plaque is blue indicating that was a Federal Battery. The plaque describes the action on the evening of September 20, 1863 at 6 PM.



The plaque reads:
Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery.
4 James; 2 Napoleons.
Willich’s Brigade, Johnson’s Division, McCook’s Corps.
Sept. 20, 1863. 6 P.M.

Capt. Wilbur F. Goodspeed, Commanding
1st Lieut. Charles W. Scovill.
2nd Lieut. Roland G. Day.


During the general withdrawal from the Kelly field line about 5:30 P.M. in which this battery attached prolonges and retired firing canister at the rapidly advancing enemy. The battery came into position on this ground supported by the brigade, and remained till all the Union troops had passed, when it retired with the rearguard to Rossville, reaching that point unmolested at about midnight.
