Academic Murray Hawes is unearthed during a botanical dig in the woods. Hawes was obsessed by solving the riddle of the Snark of Lewis Carroll, and had just bought an original copy for £200,000. He had purportedly financed the purchase through being a medical guinea pig for Dr Alex Falconer.

Forensic tests show that Hawes was killed in the Oxford Botanic Gardens and then moved to the woods. Lewis is approached by Michelle Marber, who is investigating the death of her son Stevie. Stevie had been working for Dr Falconer and Michelle believes he killed her son, together with Hawes’s brother Conor. Michelle is able to place Falconer in the Botanic Gardens at the time of Hawes death. Dr Falconer is having an affair with the Gardens curator, Helena Wright.

Conor Hawes feigns no interest in the Snark, but bidding records show that he had been outbid for the Snark by his brother. Conor runs the Wednesday Club, a club for elite students. He had tried to get Stevie to join. Unfortunately he has annoyed two new recruits and is found dead in the river.

In several papers that Hathaway and Lewis examine there are references to a Lab H. Hathaway eventually works out that Lab H refers to a laburnum species. Further the name of Falconers home is a variation on the name. When Lewis searches Falconer’s home he cracks the case. Falconer’s wife is dying of cancer and Falconer has been experimenting with Laburnum seeds. Hawes was a guinea pig, but died when Falconer increased the dose.
