"Everett "Red" Williams, the owner of the real "Flying A" service station at the corner of Fountain and Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove, sold Steinbeck the Hansen Sea-Cow, an outboard motor with a mind of its own that failed to perform on the Sea of Cortez. The mischievous hateful contraption was in fact a Johnson Sea-Horse. Steinbeck changed the brand name to avoid a lawsuit.

Williams ran his gas station for 36 years before closing it in 1970. The building housed a fruit and produce stand until it closed in 2013.
