Covington Fabrics Corp, Chimney, McColl, SC - Lonely Chimneys on Waymarking.com

This chimney is a bygone relic of the textile industry that flourished in the 50's, 60's and 70's era in the South. The coming of NAFTA and cheaper labor in other countries delivered the death knell for the textile mills of the South. The boiler house supplied the steam for many of the process to transform the cotton received from the gins into various types and grades of cloth. In its heyday, smoke billowed out the chimney proudly proclaiming people are working here. No longer does the chimney have the salute of smoke signifying the plant is in operation. Instead, one can see bats in the evening emerging from their slumber to gorge and feed on insects at night, returning later before sunrise to sleep in peaceful slumber. Ivy now adorns the chimney, no longer does it serve its original functions. The old boiler house is now falling down. The area is cordoned off by a chain link fence keeping onlookers at bay while the remains of a vibrant economy stands in a state of decay. It is soon to be taken over by the vegetation that is slowly creeping up the chimney.
