After being imprisoned in the basement prison on Fort Sill, Chief Satank, or Sitting Bear, was being transported by the 4th Cavalry to Jacksboro, Texas for trial. On the way, he bagan to chant his death song and gnawed at his wrists to free himself from his chains. He broke free and wounded one of his guards taking his rifle; however, he was killed before he managed a shot. His body lay unclaimed by his family for fear of the Army and he was evetually buried on Chief's Knoll.
