Don Quixote is the main protagonist in the novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. The novel was published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615. Don Quixote thinks of himself as knight-errant in search of adventure and has come to symbolize those who go on impossible quests.
Although the story is 400 years old the theme of idealism, chivalry, and endless quest against hopeless odds is timeless. The book has been adapted to the theater, film, and TV. It has been an inspiration to writers such as Alexander Dumas and Mark Twain.
The bronze sculpture by Nathaniel Kaz depicts a lanky Don Quixote standing upright while cradling a fencing face guard is his left arm. He holds a long curved sword, the tip of which rests on the ground, in his right hand. His elongated head and body accentuate the delusional qualities of the character.
