This abstract sculpture of the planet Uranus is located at the south entrance to Langston University, on the north side of Sammy Davis Jr. Drive. The artist, Wallace Owens, taught at Langston. This wonderful piece is about 20 feet tall, and 12 feet wide. Four curved pieces at the sides of the base all have cut-outs of universe-themed objects.
From an excerpt of a lesson black on African American History in Oklahoma:
"In addition to a celebrated career in art education, Owens
has had a prolific career as an artist. In 1996, Owens was
commissioned to create a twenty-two foot metal sculpture for the
centennial celebration of Langston University."
