The museum opened in 1997 and takes as its theme, the sea and our relationship with it. It reflects the experience of islanders and Jersey's Maritime heritage, both contemporary and historic. Each of the three large warehouse buildings has a different emphasis - the elements, the boats and the people while the fourth smaller building houses the exhibition space.
Many of the exhibits are interactive and have a hands on approach.
Outside the museum is an old de-commissioned lighthouse that is now a World War II War Memorial, an old 32 pounder cannon, an old propeller from the Caesarea II and a replica ships figurehead.
