In Medfield, south of Mass. Route 109, is this sign for Robert E. Naughton, a Medfield resident who was a police officer and who had died in an unfortunate kayak accident.

The sign is located at the corner of Claypit Road and Causeway Street, about a quarter mile south of where Causeway Street meets Mass. Route 109. The intersection with Route 109 is at a angle - it is better to approach from the east vs. the west. The sign is visible ahead as you approach from Route 109. The are is more just a T-intersection of two residential roads than a square with a small park. The sign is along one corner, along with a stone bench and some bushes.

The sign is a black sign an has the following on it:

"[Seal of Medfield]

Robert E. Naughton Civic Square
Robert E. Naughton
1940-2002

Bob Naughton an his family lived across the street from this Civic Square. He joined the Medfield Police Force in 1970, was promoted to detective in 1988 and was named the department's prosecutor in 1990.

His sense of humor, that notorious twinkle in his eye an his positive attitude were all qualities of someone who was just a good and decent man.

In 1991 he stopped would-be bank robbers, fired three shots and forced them to drop their weapons and surrender. Because of his courage, he received the George L. Hanna Award, the state's highest award for bravery.

As an officer, Bob was especially dedicated to and involved in the lives of our teens, particularly those who were often in trouble. Bob was also a very active volunteer in the Medfield community.

Bob died in 2002, doing what he loved, enjoying the outdoors while kayaking in Maine. His death was a great shock to the town. In 201, Town Meeting unanimously voted to dedicate this square in his honor."
