This life-size bronze sculpture of a nearly nude male was created in 1909 by German sculptor Fritz Röll. This sculpture was the winner of a Großer Staatspreis (a large State award) in 1909. The only thing being worn is a sandal on his left foot. The man has his left foot raised on a stump and he is bending over and binding his sandal. The sculpture was cast by Guss G. Heinze of Berlin.
The sculpture is located in Lietzenseepark. "Often overshadowed by larger, more well-known parks/lakes, Lietzensee is an accessible, charming, and soothing urban retreat, with a cafe on the north end, a walking/jogging/riding path around the entire lake, several play areas, and plenty of grass for sunbathing. The weeping willows and other trees lining the lake are particularly notable and, in the fall, quite stunning. Close to the ICC S-bahn and the Neuekantstrasse bus stops. If it's cold enough, it's a popular place to ice skate. When it's warmer, the grass in front of the monument on the east side seems to be the accepted area for topless or "smaller-bottomed" sunbathing." --Source (
