"The name comes from the fact that, out of the city and along a short, but fairly steep descent, we reach the public sources of the medieval city: ten arches, six of which four smaller Romanesque Gothic wider.
With a restoration of 1930 was demolished a chapel that had been leaning against the inside of the door in 1501 , still visible in some old photographs. On that occasion, also the fresco of the Madonna and Child with Saints Michael and John the Baptist in the circle of Lippo Memmi was removed and rushed to the Piazza del Duomo , under the loggia of the Palazzo Comunale . Following the rapid deterioration of the paint layer, was restored in 2010 and is currently in the municipal art gallery, in a temporary location.
Today the exterior of the door shows a round arch lowered to Siena, made of brick. The arc is instead simply a round arch. We also see a crowning both inside and outside consists of a series of corbels with hanging arches."
