Scratch dials were placed adjacent to the Priest's Doors of churches to indicate to the priests that a service should be started. Here at Springfield the different priests must have decided that the service times would be different from their predecessors and 'scratched' their own times. This was in the days before there were clocks, but raises the question, what happened when the sun didn't shine?
There are three dials to the left of the door and one to the right, the top-most dials are the best preserved but the gnomons of all are long gone.
The door and dials are one of the eight features to be found in the church mentioned in the welcome leaflet.
Sundial Type: Scratch dial
