Edward Richardson is an apprentice journalist at Evensford’s local newspaper. Edward is sent to interview the reclusive Richardsons. There he meets the niece of the house, Lydia Aspen.
Lydia at first seems shy, and is encouraged by her aunts to go out with Edward. Edward takes Lydia ice skating, and later to events in the town. Lydia slowly comes out of her shell and Edward learns new social skills. However, after she inherits wealth, Lydia starts to show a wilder side and starts to play several men friends off against each other.
