Charlie Gimbert has inherited the management of a snooker player, Murray McNally, in his twilight years. In order to keep McNally on the tour and off the bottle, Gimbert has hired Lovejoy to find Mary Queen of Scots billiard table. McNally wants the table and Gimbert figures he can string him along on the tour by getting Lovejoy to research the table.

Lovejoy will only get his bonus at the end of the snooker tour, and he eventually tumbles to the fact he might not get paid. Lovejoy plots his revenge and speaks to Willy Kinross, the dodgy antiques dealer that introduced McNally to the idea of Mary’s table. Kinross gets Lovejoy some early baize and Lovejoy hopes to use it to fake a table. The baize on the table was used to cover Mary’s body at her death, so Lovejoy will just leave threads of the baize on nails on an Elizabethan table.

Before he can make his fake table he goes with Gimbert and McNally to Drew Hall. Mary’s jailer was a Drew and he disposed of Mary’s belongings. Lovejoy wants to consult the Drew archives, but whilst reading them he notices a table with an anagram of Mary Stewart on it. The contents of Drew Hall are up for auction and Lovejoy convinces Gimbert to buy the table. Lovejoy primes Ross to bid against Gimbert, and Gimbert ends up paying £15,000 for the table.

Gimbert does not intend McNally to have the table, but will use the table at the snooker exhibition. McNally has other ideas. He hates billiards and smashes the table with an axe.
