Rumsey is an economical town, if nothing else, as they have managed to house their town hall, library, post office and fire hall all in a single building. The fire hall is in the east side of the building on First Avenue, at Main Street.

The fire department would most certainly be all volunteer, given the size of the community. I'm not going to try to make you believe that this human powered fire extinguisher is on their active roster, but then... you never know.

What this appears to be is a chemical extinguisher with a length of hose atop, a metal box at the front for tools and such and a wood tongue with a pair of handles at the end. These indicate that this wooden wheeled vehicle must, indeed, have been intended to be pulled by firemen from the fire hall to the location of a fire.

As one can see, it is on display outside the Rumsey fire hall and is very likely the hamlet's very first fire fighting vehicle. It's cool that they still have it - and have gone to the trouble of restoring and displaying it.
