In Cumberland, within the old Monastery Grounds, is this mounted bell in a mowed area within sight of the Cumberland Public Library.
The Monastery Grounds, once the location of a seminary, is now public land that includes a library, a senior center, an auditorium, and many trails through woods and wetlands. The bell is in an open area within sight of the library and the access road.
The bell is on a cubic concrete block, which rests on an octagonal patio. The bell is about three feet off the ground. On the bell is the following inscription:
"Cast By George Holbrook East Medway Mass. 1840"
A plaque is on the concrete block and reads as follows:
"This bell was cast by George Holbrook in East Medway, MA in 1840 and was installed at 22 Broad Street. It remained there until March of 1977 when it was dismantled by the Knights of Columbus and brought to the Hayden Library and dedicated to the departed brothers of St. Thomas K. of C. Council #1472."
