Julius Mosen, eigentlich Johannes Gottlob Moses (* 8. Juli 1803 in Marieney; † 10.

Julius Mosen, born Johannes Gottlob Moses (* July 8th, 1803 in Marieney; † October 10th, 1867 in Oldenburg) studied law at the University of Jena. During a two- year-long visit to Italy, he received the inspiration that resulted several years later in his major works (Ritter Wahn, Cola Rienzi, Der Kongreß von Verona). On his return, he finished his law studies at Leipzig, where he then worked as a lawyer. From 1835 to 1844 he was an independent advocate in Dresden. His tragedies were very well received and were performed at the Dresden court theatre (Dresdner Hofbühne).
In 1844 the Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August von Oldenburg offered him the appointment of dramatist at the Court Theatre in Oldenburg.
His today best-known poem is the text of the "Andreas-Hofer-Lied" ("Zu Mantua in Banden"), the present anthem of the Austrian Bundesland of Tyrol.

On Julius Mosen-Platz in Oldenburg stands this monument to the poet, created in 1992 by the artists Ivo Gohsmann and Stefan Sakic. The approximately 0.75 m high bronze bust stands on a 1.10 m high granite pedestal.
