Gerhard Marcks (* 18. Februar 1889 in Berlin; † 13.
"Die Hüterin" ("the guardian") is a gift from the city to the Oldenburg State Theatre and stands in front of its doors. The sculptor Gerhard Marcks created it in form and design after his eldest daughter Brigitte. But Symbolically it rather stands for the visionary Veleda and for the protective and healing powers ascribed to the femininity.
The bronze statue was created in 1974 and has, with the base of dark granite, a height of 2.20 meters.
