Optimus Prime is the biggest of multiple transformer automotive parts creations at Primitive Designs and may well be Canada’s tallest free-standing robot. It is the only thing like it in Canada.
The Optimus Prime sculpture comes in at roughly seven-metres tall (23') and weights 2,000-kilogram.
The robot was erected in November 2012 to celebrate the store’s 10th anniversary at its location on Highway 28, just north of the 401.
The sculpture was commissioned from artisans in Southeast Asia.
The robot, which took seven months to build, is the sum of many parts. There are carburetors, sprockets, springs, shocks, wheel rims, hubcaps, gears, mufflers, filters and even timing chains from transport trucks that circle the creation’s armpits. A couple of household doorknobs anchor its kneecaps and a few lawnmower pieces found their way onto its back end.
To get here the robot was dismantled into a dozen parts to fit into a shipping container, the robot spent two months travelling by boat, train and truck. It was reassembled using a crane and secured to the wall of the 900-square-metre warehouse.
Note: Once the store closes for the season on Dec. 24, Optimus Prime will move indoors until reopening on Mar. 1.
