I recovered this U.S. Forest Service triangulation station from 1933 in good condition. It is monumented on top of a concrete posting to a former lookout tower. This disk acts as Reference Mark No. 1 for the ROBINSON series of marks (PID# NZ1071) also located here.

This disk is mentioned on the datasheet of the former lookout tower (PID# NZ1069) and has been incorrectly recovered as the station to the datasheet by other geocachers/benchmarkers. To add confusion, there was another USFS disk monumented in 1935 in a boulder near this 1933 disk. The 1935 disk has its own datasheet (PID# NZ1070).

My posted coordinates will place you very close to this mark. The following datasheet info is adequate with the exception of the wooden garage mentioned, which is now gone.

DESCRIBED BY JACKSON COUNTY OREGON 1971 STATION IS ABOUT 26 MILES EAST AND 3 MILES NORTH OF MEDFORD, ABOUT 7 MILES SOUTHWEST OF MT. MC LOUGHLIN, ON THE TOP OF A FLAT-TOPPED MOUNTAIN CALLED ROBINSON BUTTE. THE MOUNTAIN TOP IS COVERED WITH SMALL TREES AND BRUSH, AND THE STATION IS LOCATED 26 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE CENTER OF THE FOREST SERVICE LOOKOUT TOWER, NEAR THE NORTHWEST EDGE OF THE FLAT TOP. TO REACH THE STATION FROM JACKSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN MEDFORD GO EAST ON 8TH ST. FOR 0.5 MILE, THENCE LEFT (NORTH) ON RIVERSIDE FOR 1.4 MILES, THENCE RIGHT (NELY) ON STATE ROUTE 62 FOR 6.2 MILES, THENCE RIGHT (EAST) ON STATE ROUTE 140 FOR 29.2 MILES TO BIG ELK ROAD, A RED-TOP GRAVEL FOREST SERVICE ROAD ON THE RIGHT. TURN RIGHT (SOUTH) ON BIG ELK ROAD AND GO 1.7 MILES TO A GRAVEL FOREST SERVICE ROAD RIGHT AT SIGN ROBINSON BUTTE L.O.T.-2 MILES. FROM THIS POINT THE STATION IS A 1-1/2 HR. PACK UP THE GRAVEL ROAD WESTERLY TO THE SUMMIT. A VEHICLE MAY BE DRIVEN TO THE SUMMIT AFTER SNOW HAS MELTED. THE STATION MARK IS A JACKSON COUNTY CONTROL MONUMENT DISK WITH A DRILL HOLE IN ITS CENTER, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A VOLCANIC ROCK OUTCROP, 26.23 FEET NORTHWEST FROM CENTER OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. THE DISK IS ABOUT 3 FT. BELOW HIGHEST PART OF THE OUTCROP, AND IT IS STAMPED ROBINSON 1971. THE POINT LOCATED FOR ROBINSON BUTTE LOOKOUT TOWER 1933 IS THE BASE OF THE SHORT SPINDLE AT THE TOP CENTER OF THE ELEVATED FOREST SERVICE LOOKOUT HOUSE. THE POINT ON THE GROUND WAS NOT PERMANENTLY MARKED. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A U.S. FOREST SERVICE DISK CEMENTED IN THE CONCRETE FOOTING FOR THE SOUTHEAST LEG OF THE FOUR-LEGGED FOREST SERVICE TOWER, AT THE START OF THE STAIRWAY UP THE TOWER. IT IS STAMPED ROBINSON BU. L.O.T. 1933. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS A JACKSON COUNTY CONTROL MONUMENT DISK WITH AN ARROW CHISELED IN ITS CENTER, SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING VOLCANIC ROCK WITH THE ARROW POINTING TO THE STATION STAMPED ROBINSON NO. 2 1971.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1972 (LFS) THE STATION MARK, ROBINSON BU LOT (USFS) = RM 1 AND RM 2 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DISTANCES AND DIRECTIONS TO THE REFERENCE MARKS MEASURED ON THIS DATE AGREED FAIRLY WELL WITH THE 1971 MEASUREMENTS. THE 1971 DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONS-- THE ROBINSON BUTTE LOOKOUT TOWER HAS BEEN REMOVED BUT ITS CONCRETE FOOTINGS AND A WOODEN GARAGE BUILDING REMAIN. THE STATION MARK IS 56.2 FEET NORTHWEST OF A FLAGSTAFF AND 50.1 FEET WEST-NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE GARAGE. ROBINSON BU LOT (USFS) = RM 1 IS 19.6 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE GARAGE AND 15.2 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE FLAGSTAFF. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS 74.5 FEET WEST OF THE FLAGSTAFF. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 26 MILES EAST OF MEDFORD.
