The village of Tuena became established during the goldrushes of the mid 19th century. Gold was discovered in 1851 and the town was officially named in May 1859. Gold was also found at nearby at Mt Costigan, Junction Point, Abercrombie River and Grove Creek. By 1860 the first school was operating.
St. Margaret's Presbyterian Church has been an integral part of Tuena's Presbyterian community since the Church was consecrated in 1890. It is of high significance locally for its social and religious associations and is an important architectural feature of the Tuena village.
