In 1840 the Mass General Court reorganized the volunteer companies into the Massachusetts Militia (MVM which is over the front entrance). This structure remained in place until 1903 when the militia was re-organized into the National Guard.

The Adams Armory was originally constructed as the headquarters for Company M,2nd Infantry, which was established in 1887.
