The plaque says, "In her youth, Florence Delorez Joyner was both a star athlete and a strait-A student. After graduating from Jordan High School in South Central Los Angeles, Joyner attended CSU Northridge and UCLA, where she majored in psychology. She married Al Joyner, 1984 Olympic triple jump champion, in 1987. Florence Joyner was the first American woman to win four medals at one Olympic Games, a feat she accomplished in Seoul, Korea in 1988. She also received the 1988 Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete, the 1988 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year Award, and induction into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. In addition to her athletic achievements, Joyner was the spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. In 1993, she became the first woman to chair the President's council on Physical Fitness and Sports. She was also a prolific artist and authored children's books. Joyner returned frequently to South Central Los Angeles to speak to youth, encouraging them to emphasize academics over athletics. In 1998, Joyner died at age 38 in Mission Viejo."
