Originally built as a one room schoolhouse to the east of its present location in the community/township of Montfort. It was moved to its present location sometime before 1927 and an additional room added on the eastern side. It sits on a rubble stone foundation. The building is now a community hall and when we visited it was hosting a flea market. One of the vendors happened to be a former student of the school and told us that, to the best of her knowledge, the school was built in 1878. Apparently her memory is somewhat faulty as the Montfort School website tells us that the school was built in 1902 and finally closed after the 1946-1947 school year.
She also took us on a tour of the building, showing us the original schoolroom, which is now being used as a kitchen and dining room.
In the accompanying photos, the interior pix are of the original class room. The addition is the longer portion to the left as seen from the front. The photo below shows only the original part of the school, with the single class room behind the cloak room.
