County of center: Roberts County
Location of center: TX-70 & FM-282, 6 miles N. of Pampa
Center built: 1914
Settlers came to this area in 1876. The county was organized in 1889. In 1890 a pioneer school district was ordered by the courts, and classes were at first held in the homes, then in 1914 a New Yorker gave this 2 acres for a school. The residents or the area built this 28 by 36 foot schoolhouse.
It soon became the focus of the community. Held classes for school, used for elections, church services and other activities.
All grades were transferred to other schools in 1934 and this became the local community center. Is being renovated today (July 2009) as I was here [notice ladder leaning against building]. My early morning stop I shared the intersection with a school bus, and the driver wanted to know why I was there. So I told her, I collect Historic Markers. And she was eager to give local information about the building.
