Two con men, Ian Craigie and Bill Carter, found a new age commune. Ian Craigie is the “master” of the community. Carter wants to cash in the community and move on, but Craigie is starting to believe in the place. They row and Carter is found dead at the bottom of the stairs. Barnaby investigates.
One of the commune Sylvie Gamelin decides, on her 18th birthday, to give a several million pound inheritance to the commune. Shortly afterwards Craigie is somehow stabbed whilst celebrating Sylvie’s coming of age. Following Craigie’s death, Guy Gamelin is found dead of a heart attack, with an empty pill bottle beside him. Barnaby concludes that Guy wasa murdered by someone withdrawing his heart pills.
The rest of the commune come under suspicion. Many of them have flaky pasts. The one that Barnaby eventually picks as the murder is Sylvie’s boyfriend, Christopher Wainwright, who claimed to have been a BBC cameraman in Rwanda. The real cameraman has just been shown getting married on TV, so Barnaby investigates his real background and finds Wainwright has been in a circus in Spain. There he learnt knife throwing. The motive for the murders were to preserve Sylvie’s inheritance, so that he could marry into money.
