The first of the funerals is that of Vivienne Marwood, wife of Henry Marwood. Vivienne had MS but died of an overdose of tablets. Attending the funeral was Mildred Danvers, a cousin of the vicar, Anthony Gant. Soon after the funeral Mildred is found dead from an overdose of barbiturates found in her hip flask. Mildred’s will be the second funeral.

Before the Reverend Gant can perform Mildred’s funeral he takes part in the village fayre and is shot through the head with a high velocity rifle shot. The shot came from the church belfry. Whilst digging the grave for the third funeral, the grave digger discovers the body of the curate buried at the bottom of Gant’s grave.

The last three deaths are murders, the first being suicide, although Henry Marwood does confess to providing the tablets. Barnaby finds the link between the deaths is a photograph showing a man and a woman. The man is Henry’s father, the woman is Lorna Hastings. The photograph was in Mildred’s possessions, but was taken by the Reverend Gant after her death. The curate had removed the photo after Gant’s death. All were killed for the photograph.

Barnaby eventually works out that the woman on the photo is Lorna. When confronted she confesses to the murders. The man in the phote is Henry’s father, but he is not a Marwood. In a fire that destroyed Marwood Hall Lorna had been a nursery maid. In the nursery had been her son Benjamin and Henry Marwood. Being unable to save both children she saved her son Benjamin, but said he was Henry Marwood so that her child could have a better life.

The wedding is between Henry Marwood, now Benjamin Hastings, and Peggy Ayncombe. They had been friends whilst Vivienne was alive, but kept their romance secret.
