"Starting in 2000, funding was begun by the Michigan Labor History Society to erect a monument to the Michigan Labor movement. After a competition involving numerous sculptors was completed, a two sculptor entry was selected. The winners were a local artist and a foreign resident living in the city, David Barr and Sergio de Guisti.
Their design, which was constructed in the section of Hart Plaza bordering the Jefferson Avenue sidewalk, has multiple parts. David Barr's contribution consists of two arcs reaching skyward, which are meant to represent a giant gear coming out of the ground, as well as the continuous cycle of work. Surrounding the arcs are de Guisti's contribution, boulders with bas relief's depicting labor's sacrifices to achieve their eventual victory over inhumane treatment.
Construction of this monument was completed in 2003, and ever since it has proved to be an impressive entry gate to the plaza for countless visitors. "Transcending" is a dynamic statue that represents the importance of labor unions in our city's history, and it is fitting that it has such a prominent location in our fair city, a major center of the modern labor movement."
