America's Byways has classed a 62 mile section of the Turquoise Trail, between Santa Fe and Albuquerque of significant interest and approved the route as a scenic byway.
Several trails are funnelled along this route, such as The El Camino Real Trail, and of course Route 66, due to the Sandia mountains and the La Angostura Pass, which had to be negotiated.
This unique marker has an inscription on the monument which reads:
'A long time ago the people from the South would come to trade with us, the ancient ones told us they loved the turquoise from our hills and for this they would exchange copper bells and the bird with the brilliant feathers.'
