On November 15, 1945, a meeting chaired by Comrade W. Rice was held in the Parish Hall in Chemainus to discuss the possibility of forming a Legion Branch in Chemainus. After many months of discussions, at the February 20, 1946 meeting, Officers were sworn in by the Provincial Secretary. It was on this date that Chemainus Branch 191 of the Royal Canadian Legion finally became a reality with its first sworn-in slate of Officers.
Over the next few years, a building fund was created and plans were drawn up for a Legion Hall. After the fund grew and local businesses showed their willingness to donate materials, the Hall was finally built. On April 20, 1950, the first General Meeting was held in the new Legion Hall.
