Today's Waterwheel Park is located where the Chemainus sawmill manager's house used to stand. This nine-foot red-cedar wheel, built as a Canadian Centennial project, is a replica of the original wheel that provided power for the first Chemainus sawmill established in 1862. H.R. MacMillan, the first Chief Forester of British Columbia and co-founder of MacMillan Bloedel, one of the world's largest lumber companies, pressed the button to start the water flowing to this water wheel in June 1967. The water wheel isn't connected to anything, but it's authentically powered by flowing water and sits in front of one of Chemainus' many world-famous murals (WM55NM). The water is turned off in the tourist off-season, but the wheel turns continuously throughout the summer.
