Grete Waitz was born on October 1st, 1953 and died recently in 2011. She was born in Oslo, the capital of Norway and quickly became a national sensation when she competed competitively in the 1984 olympics in Los Angeles. She brought Norway the silver medal for the marathon run. She was the first woman in history to run a marathon in less than two an a half hours. She won a total of nine New York City marathons between the years of 1978 to 1988. This statue was placed here before she died, but now it has became a living tribute.
