The monument shows the New Mexico section of the ancient path from Mexico along a route used for centuries. El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro, (The Kings Road)
Several trails are funnelled along this route, such as this one the El Camino Real, The Turquoise Trail and of course Route 66, due to the Sandia Mountains, and the La Angostura Pass, which has to be negotiated.
From the American Byways Web Site:
"Cultures along El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro (The Royal Road of the Interior Land), are as diverse as its history and scenery. Pueblos reveal artisans crafting wares using centuries-old methods. The route, first travelled by Don Juan de Onate in 1598, provided news, supplies, and travel to the first capital of the New World." Text Source: (
