The cemetery website (visit link) provides several tibdits of history in conjuntion with celebrating 150 years of existence in 2013.

The need for the cemetery was driven by the dead returning from the U.S. Civil War, therefore the town met in April 1863 to agree to purchase land from a local farmer. The first 32 acres was bought for $1,040 (now equivalent to $302,000.00 using production worker compensation for comparison). This Fountain Square and Prospect Circle is located at the brow of the hill. Instead of war dead, the first two burials were a pair of four month old twins who had died from inflamation of the brain.

The chapel was designed by Monongahela's architect F. P. Keller with construction in 1895 at a cost of $3,525.98 (~$781,000 today).

Cemetery hours are 7:30am until dusk.

There are 5,812 burials per (visit link)
