Built in 1871, the brick Gothic Revival style church has been part of the spiritual home to the local African American community.

From the NRHP application (secondary link below) tells us that local architect/builder John Blythe constructed the brick Gothic Revival church in 1871. However, the inside was not completed until 1894. The budget was $12,000 which would be just under $3 million using production worker compensation for comparison.
When the AME church was being assembled, Blythe had at least two ohter churches, four commercial buildings, and five brick homes in progress. These were in several different architectual styles. His career was later hampered by destruction of his planing mill twice - by fire and flood.
