Boeing IM-99B BOMARC Missile
After the scrapping of the CF105 Avro Arrow program in February 1959, the BOMARC anti-bomber surface to air missile program was to be the main air defense system for Canada. In 1960 the BOMARC missile program was scaled back 75% to become support for the CF 101 Voodoo interceptor air defense system. The Voodoo, acquired starting in 1961, along with the BOMARC, assumed the role that the Avro Arrow was intended to fulfill. Only two squadrons were equipped with the BOMARC missile, 446 Squadron at North Bay and 447 Squadron at LaMacaza.
In 1971 the BOMARC missile defence program was abandoned. Although the BOMARC was nuclear warhead capable, it was a great disappointment for Canadian forces to fulfill Canada's role in the North American Air Defence (NORAD) Command.
The performance of the BOMARC missile was purported to be: Max. Weight 16,000 lbs, Max. Velocity Mach 2.8, Ceiling 65,000 ft., Max, Range 200 to 400 miles.
Some fifty-six missiles were in service in Canada, but no BOMARC was ever launched in combat.
