Three distinct features atop Herd Peak Mountain brought our family to the summit: A geocache, a series of benchmarks and the Herd Peak Lookout Tower. We were able to discover all three on a beautiful day after a drive on forest roads up to the summit. Herd Peak Lookout Tower is a functioning fire lookout and manned during the fire season and is listed in the National Historic Lookout Register. The HERD series of benchmarks are also located next to the lookout and we found four disks total, as well as the Herd Peak lookout, which is also a benchmark, a nice find. There is also a geocache located here in an ammo box full of swag. Beautiful views of the nearby Grass and Shasta Valleys await as well as very picturesque views of Mount Shasta. You won't be disappointed traveling up to this summit!
