Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn were a duo of magicians that incorporated white lions and tigers into their act. Their show at the Mirage Casino was one of the most popular attractions in Las Vegas.
While performing at the Mirage on October 3, 2003, Roy Horn was bitten on the neck by a male white tiger named Montecore. He sustained a serious injury that caused the Mirage to close their act. By 2009, Roy has sufficiently recovered to be able to perform a benefit show with the tiger Montecore. In 2010, Siegfried and Roy retired their act.
The large sculpture of a lion between Siegfried and Roy was installed in a small plaza, behind a fence, on the sidewalk in front of the Mirage Casino while they were still performing. It has become somewhat of a shrine for visitors.
A nearby plaque on a stand is inscribed:
Dedicated to
Siegfried & Roy
Masters of the impossible,
creators of the unprecedented phenomenon in the theatrical arts.
As the pioneers of family entertainment in Las Vegas,
they have changed the course of its history and
have become the city's all-time premier attraction.
Furthermore, they have made conservation history in providing
tireless and dedicated leadership to help preserve nature's
endangered white tigers for future generations.
