Lovejoy acts as an advisor to a client, Malleson. He advises him that the painting he has bought is a fake, but Malleson buys it anyway. Later Malleson is forced off the road, killed and the painting stolen. Lovejoy decides to investigate.

Other than Malleson, a pretty blond woman was the chief bidder. Her name was Caterina and is the granddaughter of a man called Pinder. Caterina summons Lovejoy to lunch. There Pinder offer Lovejoy a position as a forger in Venice. Pinder is on a mission to save the art treasures of Venice from the rising floods. His plan is to remove the treasures and replace them with fakes.

Lovejoy refuses the offer, but journeys alone to Venice. In Venice he is met by a tour guide, who keeps popping up everywhere he goes. He goes to one of the islands and is shot at, the bullet hitting the tour guide in the arm. He decides to trace Pinder’s villa in Venice. He finds the villa but cannot get entry. Lady Jane tells Pinder that Lovejoy now wants to join, and he gets admittance. In the villa is Lavinia, Caterina’s twin sister.

Lovejoy becomes a forger and is taken, blindfold, to one of the islands of Venice. He manages to trace the island and floods the workshops to destroy the operation.
