Lovejoy wants to buy a rare Japanese firefly cage, but misses his opportunity when the police arrest him over a stolen chalice. The firefly cage is bought by a Nicola Page. Lovejoy fails to find her after the auction, but she later seeks him out. She produces a second firefly cage made of coal. She wanted the Japanese version because she believes the coal version has a clue hidden in it. Lovejoy can’t find a hidden message, but makes a drawing before giving the cage back.
Lovejoy goes to see a beachcomber friend, Drummer, who gave him the stolen chalice. Drummer had found the chalice on the beach. Lovejoy asks Drummer about coal carving. Drummer tells him that the greatest exponent was George Hepplestone. Lovejoy goes to find George Hepplestone, but finds he has just died, and that Nicola Page is his daughter. Unfortunately Nicola Page is also the girlfriend of a villain, Devlin, who warns Lovejoy off with a beating.
Lovejoy and Lady Jane decide to pay Drummer a visit, only to find him dead on the beach. Opposite where Drummer is found is a Napoleonic fort, just off shore. Lovejoy recognises the outline as the same as that of the coal firefly cage. Lovejoy and Tinker steal Charlie Gimbert’s boat and investigate the fort. There they find stolen antiques. On the way back from the fort they are attacked by Devlin in his boat. Lovejoy manages to fight them off with an improvised Molotov cocktail. He is arrested for stealing Gimbert’s boat, but is bailed out by Lady Felsham. Gimbert later drops the charges in exchange for one of Lovejoy’s fake antiques.
